Learn more

At Amity Pelvic Health and Wellness, we believe in working with your body, not against it.  Here’s how we help:

We treat you as a whole person, not a diagnosis.

With specialties for everything and seemingly little overlap, the healthcare system can make you feel like you’re just the sum of your parts. But that’s not how our bodies function in reality. Amity provides an integrative approach by considering your mental, emotional, physical, and financial health when developing treatment plans

We collaborate more than we direct.

Therapy doesn’t work if you don’t. Our job is to make it easy for you to do the work! We strive to provide clear education and manageable home programs. We take the time to understand your needs, and we adapt our approach if something isn’t working for you.

We facilitate empowerment, not dependence.

Our goal is to become obsolete. With a strong emphasis on education and personal responsibility, we enable you to heal yourself and manage your symptoms. The strategies you learn in therapy can be used again and again so that your results will last a lifetime.

Discover the Amity Difference: What to expect from your treatment sessions

Pelvic health is multi-faceted, existing at the intersection between physical, mental, and behavioral health. Many factors contribute to pelvic floor dysfunction, which means there are numerous strategies for treatment. Below are some examples of treatments, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all. At Amity, we work with you to determine the best approach!

Behavioral Modification: You may not know that your daily habits and routines are contributing to pelvic floor dysfunction. At Amity, we know what to look for; and we can teach you how to implement small, sustainable changes, which can drastically improve your quality of life.

Targeted Exercise: Your pelvic floor muscles are like any other muscles in your body. They can be tight or weak (sometimes both!), and their functioning is also affected by surrounding musculature. By addressing imbalances and strengthening your muscles, we also strengthen your pelvic health.

Biofeedback Therapy: Most people have little awareness of their pelvic floor muscles, making it difficult to know how to contract them or release tension. Biofeedback therapy is a tool, which measures the resting tone of your pelvic floor muscles and presents it in a graph on a computer screen. The graph provides a visual representation of what your pelvic floor muscles are actually doing when you try to contract/release them, which increases muscle awareness and facilitates a deeper brain-body connection.

Manual Therapy: Manual therapy releases excessive muscle tension and can be helpful in addressing pelvic pain. Manual therapy is provided externally on surrounding muscles in the hip/back, or even internally on the pelvic floor muscles themselves. Manual therapy is just one tool and using it is based on your comfort level.

Mindfulness/Meditation: A lot of people tense their muscles when they’re stressed. The pelvic floor muscles are no exception! Practicing mindfulness and meditation can reduce stress and improve awareness of pelvic floor muscles, allowing you to release tension you didn’t even know was there.

Breathwork: Your pelvic floor muscles are deeply related to your diaphragm and breathing patterns. Every inhale and exhale causes your muscles to relax and contract! We can capitalize on this relationship and use your breath to enhance your pelvic floor function.

Meet Meg- Your Pelvic Health Therapist Serving Walterboro, SC

I’m originally from York, Pennsylvania, but I moved to Charleston, South Carolina to pursue my Doctorate degree in Occupational Therapy at Medical University of South Carolina. I met my husband in Charleston, and we moved to Walterboro together in 2022. I love being outside, dancing, and making art.

Why Pelvic Floor Therapy?

My interest in pelvic health began while I was working as a nursing aide in an assisted living facility. As I helped residents in the bathroom, I noticed how much incontinence issues affected self-perception and quality of life. At the time, I didn’t know at there was something you could do about it!

Fast forward to graduate school where I was introduced the Pelvic Floor Therapy specialty. I found out it’s extremely common to have pelvic floor dysfunction, and it can affect just about anyone. I also learned that pelvic floor dysfunction causes more than incontinence. It also contributes to chronic pain, prolapse, and other muscle imbalances. But somehow, so little information about pelvic health is common knowledge. I myself had pelvic floor dysfunction, and I didn’t even know!

After completing a clinical rotation in Pelvic Floor Therapy, I knew I had to get more involved. I graduated in 2023 and started working at HCA Healthcare: Colleton Hospital in their inpatient rehabilitation, acute, and outpatient therapy settings. While working, I continued to pursue education in pelvic floor therapy, and I prepared to open my own practice.

And so, Amity Pelvic Health and Wellness was born! I’ve loved serving the Walterboro community over the past 3 years, and I’m looking forward to serving you in this new capacity.
